Who Is Getting Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery?
The Eyelid Surgery Patient: Who is getting cosmetic eyelid surgery?
In 2002, nearly 230,000 people underwent cosmetic eyelid surgery. That represents a five year increase of 44% in the number of patients who had eyelid surgery. In terms of popularity, eyelid surgery is the third most popular cosmetic surgery procedure. (Liposuction is in first place, while breast augmentation is in second place.)
For every man who has eyelid surgery, four women undergo the procedure. As you can see in the chart on the left, most cosmetic eyelid surgery patients tend to be middle-aged or older. Fewer than six percent of eyelid surgery patients are under 35 years old. More than half are over fifty.
What type of person makes a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
The best candidates are women and men who are physically healthy and mentally sound. They should have realistic expectations about what eyelid surgery can do for their appearance as well as what it and cannot do for them. Drooping eyelids or under-eye bags typically found on older people, but it is not unusual for younger people to undergo the procedure, particularly of they have inherited very droopy eyelids and/or large under-eye bags.
