Dermal Fillers Overview

An Introduction to Dermal Fillers and What They Can Do

Dermal Fillers

Plastic surgeons use many antiaging skin care techniques to correct eye wrinkles and other signs of natural aging. One non-surgical method that has become extremely popular is the use of dermal fillers. Dermal fillers you may have heard of include hyaluronic acid fillers, Restylane®, Juvederm®, collagen, Artefill®, Radiesse®, and Sculptra®. Dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid should not be confused with Botox®. Botox® may be used for anti-aging skin care but works through a completely different process.

Plastic surgeons refer to the use of dermal fillers as soft tissue augmentation. Soft tissue augmentation is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure performed to correct eye wrinkles, other facial wrinkles, depressions in the skin and/or scarring. The procedure involves injecting a substance such as hyaluronic acid or collagen into the area being treated to plump it up or fill it up. With very few exceptions, the result is not usually permanent and touch-up injections may be required every three to 12 months depending on which substance was injected and your specific body chemistry.

The purpose of this article is to provide you with a better understanding of dermal fillers, procedure and cost so you can make an educated decision with your surgeon if dermal fillers are right for you. All the dermal fillers we discuss in this write-up have been approved by the FDA. We give you a brief overview of each one, but you should consult with your plastic surgeon about which one may be right for you.
