Who Should Not Get Eyelid Surgery?

Risk Factors for Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid Surgery Risk Factors - Who should avoid the procedure?

Some people should not have eyelid surgery.  Aside from having realistic expectations and being in good health, there are certain medical conditions which increase the risk of complications from cosmetic eyelid surgery.   These risk factors are:

  • "Dry Eye Syndrome" or problems with your tear ducts.
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Graves' disease
  • Detached retina
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease

Your plastic surgeon will ask you about your health during the consultation, so before you go, make a list of any medical conditions for which you have been treated.  Make sure you tell your plastic surgeon about any medical condition you have.  That way, you and your plastic surgeon can make the best choice about your surgery.  If you are being treated for any of the conditions in the bulleted list above, it is a good idea to discuss your desire to have eyelid with your family doctor or the specialist who treats your condition. If they have any additional concerns as a result of your health, share them with your plastic surgeon.
